Welcome to Mr. Jones' Geographical Issues 20F Page!

WELCOME

You’re about to embark on a journey of discovery, where you’ll learn new skills and challenge yourself every single day. Take a look at all the relevant details about my class and if you have any questions, please feel free to connect with me and get in touch. These times of uncertainty with COVID-19 are difficult for us all but together as as a team, we can help you stay focused and achieve your goals. Everything will be back to normal before you know it :)

If you have any questions please feel free to connect with me at:

mrjonessbdhs@gmail.com

OR

njones@sbdhs.net

I will respond as soon as I can to answer your questions.

In the sections below, you will find a day by day break down of what each class will look like so that it is easy to follow along. Details about submission of work will also be included with each piece as there will be numerous ways that we will be running class and every class will not be exactly the same. Each class will state the requirement of that particular class, including assignments, work to be completed as well as PowerPoint slides to follow and most importantly, the specific times we will be live as a class, and the method in which this will be achieved (e.g. Zoom Live Video Conferencing)

Researching and Writing

Class Overview

In the information below, you will find what will be scheduled for each class moving forward. Not every class will run the same, however, you will be expected to do your part and complete as much as you can. Classes will contain aspects such as videos, live streaming Question and Answer, prerecorded videos to watch and much more. I want to try and make this as engaging for your learning as I can however, we all know this is uncharted territory for us all. If we all stick together and help each other with the learning process, the time of COVID-19 Coronavirus will be a distant memory and something that you talk about for years to come. Remember - it can only make you a stronger person :)

Thursday, April 16th, 2020

We will not be having a Zoom call today however we will be back up to speed to 2 sessions a week from Monday. I want to take the time personally to thank each of you for buying in to the changes and giving the work 100%. You are all truly an inspiration to the rest of the school and I am proud of each and every one of you.

Today's work consists of the following continuing on and concluding our section on sustainability.

1st thing I would like you to do is complete your peer evaluations of the submitted projects. Simple marking scheme of 1-5.

5 being the best mark that you feel that student has included everything that was required from the project and that it was easy to understand and follow. A grade of 1 however, would mean that they have not achieved the result that was anticipated and that you feel it was very difficult to understand

The template peer analysis form can be found HERE

Please DO NOT write anything on it, just copy and paste onto a blank Google sheet please and thank you :)

Secondly I would like you to complete a self evaluation of the project. Keep it to a few paragraphs following these questions as a guide:

1) Do you feel that you were able to successfully complete the allocated task?

2) How difficult/easy was it to find the information you were looking for?

3) How would I rate my effort level in the assignment process?

4) Did you encounter any difficulties along the way? If so what were they and how did you overcome them?

Please complete on the following Google Form link HERE

Project hand in - please submit a clear picture/pictures of your finished product along with any description and the questions you had to answer - we need to be able to understand what you are showing us as clear as possible. If you are able to do a video or several pictures that would be ideal as it would give us a better understanding.

Please send work to the file labelled Sustainability project in the Google class Drive and clearly label with your name so we can see who did what ready for evaluations

I will post pictures ready for class tomorrow :) I am looking forward to seeing what you have all come up with

Unit 3 Quiz - has been moved to Wednesday (although you can complete it anytime after it is uploaded)

Apologies for the switch - it was a crazy weekend and I didn't get round to completing it. I will inform you all as soon as it is up online. For today continue with what is posted below

Notes on Topics in Industry and Trade

If you complete your quiz and would like to get a head start on the next class, I have posted notes on topics above. This includes a refresher on sustainability as well as trade terminology (e.g. trade deficit) and the increasing numbers of Indigenous communities involved in trade.

Start by watching this video on Imports/Exports. Take notice of key terms such as trade deficit and trade surplus. This is a good introduction to the idea of trade

FYI - NAFTA has been replaced by USMCA

https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/what-are-the-differences-between-nafta-and-the-usmca  Watch this video from CNN to give you more information (although bear in mind that it is the US thoughts thoughts on what USMCA will bring)

There is a task on the last page that involves you having to do a little research into Indigenous businesses.

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2020

Continuing with topics in trade and Industry from yesterday.

Complete task 1 and submit to the Google Drive for marking. We will be discussing this in our calls on Friday and comparing notes.

If you have completed all of this, then you may begin to look through and start the tasks related to Globalization.

I have 3 videos for you to look through for this as well as some slides on transportation. These should help you understand the idea of globalization

1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJ0nFD19eT8

2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SnR-e0S6Ic

For transportation, you have to think big scale - image products having to travel half way around the word to get to you.

How many methods of transport do you think it takes to arrive at your stores?

Task 1:

1. Find 5 items in your house and find out their country of origin

2. Once the country of origin is found, work out based on distance (no calculation needed - just transport methods). HINT - most products will require more than 1 method of transport)

3. Note down your reasons for choosing those methods of transport and prepare for discussion on Friday

TEAMS call today is postponed until Friday. We will be discussing a variety of things such as Transportation methods and Canadian trade with other countries.

We will also discuss the quiz.

Unit 5 - Urban Places

Part 1 - Demographics (The study of human populations)

Using the handout DEMOGRAPHY (click on the name), read through the factors that affect population distribution and briefly answer the question at the end of the handout. You will need your text book for this exercise.

An excellent method of demonstrating the changing population of a country (through age demographics), is a population pyramid. Population pyramids clearly show the age range of the population of a country. You can also see from these pyramids what type of country they are (less economically developed, developing, developed) See the handout HERE

For next call (Thursday), please have the following prepared:

1. Demography examples from textbook

2. 2 examples of a less economically developed population pyramid and 2 examples of a more economically developed country - make comparisons of them both - Please submit this part to the Google Drive - folder POPULATION PYRAMIDS :)

Wednesday, June 10th, 2020

Continue with work from yesterday on demography and Population Pyramids

If you have completed all the work from yesterday, you can get a head start on the next section Settlement patterns - located HERE

Read though the slides on how land is used in more urban areas. When reading think carefully about the reasons why certain areas are placed where within a city - how does it all help the city grow, develop and most importantly, function?

Slides HERE
